Our Story
Nestled in the Somerset countryside, we are lucky enough to have a little slice of farmland. 100 acres that have been permanent pasture for three generations. The farm is primarily a hub for rearing beef cattle, but as custodians of the land, we want to enrich our soils and nourish our community with more than just beef.
Along came the pigs
A very generous Christmas gift brought a lovely litter of piglets into an empty calf pen, they got to work rooting and turning the straw and before we knew it, they had composted the stable bedding into a nutritious medium for spreading on the fields. Albeit a small sample, but the cogs started to turn. What else could we bring to the farm that could help us cycle nutrients in a more natural, efficient way? We rather quickly sold all of our pork. If our neighbours want to buy local meat, then perhaps we could be onto something more.
The chickens came next
A family friend suggested we have a go at rearing chickens for meat, and after a bit of research, a field pen was constructed and our first batch of chickens were out of the brooder and on pasture. We quickly realised the quality of homegrown chicken was exponentially better than anything we could get our hands on locally, and after a few reviews from dinner guests, we knew we could be onto a winner.
...and then the eggs
We very quickly fell in love with our growing poultry flock, and as it turned out, so did the land. The system of birds following behind the grazing cattle allowed the animals to exhibit natural behaviours, and the grass was looking lush and green. It soon became apparent that eggs might be a good addition to our farm gate offering, with a more permanent flock of laying birds living on the land. We welcomed our first flock of laying hens in 2025, learning on the tools and from our mistakes. There is nothing quite like fresh eggs, and our customers thought the same.
